DISCOVERY OF ORACLE OF THE CHAVIN CULTURE IN THE SIERRA OF LAMBAYEQUE

Wednesday, October 30, 2013

An oracle of the Chavin culture, which would be over 3000 years old, was found in the Andean region of Congona, Cañaris District, Province of Ferreñafe, Lambayeque Region.

After a month of patient work of excavation, archaeologists at the Naylamp Executing Unit, discovered a religious sanctuary, where our ancestors worshiped deities.

It is a temple of the formative times where we have discovered underground structures where priests and ancients made the gods talk. This allows the understanding of the extension and the strong presence of architectural patterns of the Chavin culture, which extended up to 800 kilometers from its main center,” archaeologist Walter Alva Alva said.

He explained that after the discovery of two monoliths, of cylindrical column-shape and carved with typical feline iconography of the Chavin culture, they were able to concentrate research in this Andean region located more than 3000 meters above sea level and at eight hours away from the city.

He added “It is a sanctuary strategically located in the upper valley of La Leche. We’re talking about perfectly shaped structures, where the fate of the ancient inhabitants was predicted. In addition, it is banishing the myth that Chavin was very influential in its growth period throughout Peru”.

The archaeologist said that after this finding, it is being hypothesized that each valley of the Lambayeque region has a temple dedicated to the worship of the water and fertility on their upper part.

He said that this work was funded by the Cañariaco Mining Project and that it also allowed the participation of the community living in this area, which now may be an important attraction for visitors.

Alva said that what now comes after this important discovery is to seek the value and to make this Andean zone a part of the tourist circuit of Lambayeque region.

LAMBAYEQUE: RELIGIOUS SANCTUARY OF THE CHAVIN CULTURE IS DISCOVERED IN CAÑARIS

Wednesday, October 30, 2013

A religious sanctuary over 3000 years old was discovered by archaeologist Walter Alva, director of the Museo Tumbas Reales of Sipan (Royal Tombs Museum of Sipan), who worked with archaeologists from the Naylamp Executing Unit (Unidad Ejecutora Naylamp).

The temple was found in center of the Congona village, District of Cañaris, Lambayequean province of Ferreñafe, at more than 3000 meters above sea level, and eight hours away from Cañaris.

Excavations following rigorous methods of archeology, established 10 trenches which should conclude the core of the sanctuary, as well as four mounds covered with rubble to define their architectural forms.

Alva said that the temple, which would have been used to worship the water, would confirm the myth that the Chavin culture would have had much influence on their growth period throughout Peru.

He also gave details on finding of ceramics that will be analyzed and will serve to support the application to give value to this new finding, which was conducted with the financial support of the mining project Cañariaco.
